Most is there, but smashed right into your face in a rather bombastic fashion. There is this ‘sameness’ (lack of another description) they all seem to have. I simply don’t truly love this modern take on how a concert grand should sound like. Haven’t played a real VC280 myself yet, but the latest Steingraeber, Steinway, Fazioli, Bechstein, Yamaha and Kawai renderings. I talked to a concert pianist performing in different places in Europe and he told me that he visited several piano stores checking out the VC280 and that a German shop complained about the VC280 as uneven and harsh with a problematic upper octave. I tune several Yamaha CF111 concert grands and some, not all, have a sound i also prefer over the CFX. Nothing really happened that inspired me. Played it at the Messe in 1997 first and thought it was loud, clear, bombastic with few inspiring upper harmonics. But it lacks the mystical upper harmonics and haunting sound i personally like much more from the golden era’s.įor me Fazioli started most of this ’new concert grand sound’.
